The MDE recommended some changes to the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education which would have “brought the state in line with federal requirements.” Michigan’s Special Ed rules are better than the federal rules, so this would have weakened our state’s services for special needs students. However, the legislative committee that approves rule changes did not accept the MDE’s proposal. This is a big victory for special education students, teachers, and staff. We opposed the changes and met with legislators to encourage them to reject the proposal. Thank you to all the members, parents and advocates that worked hard to stand for students and special education. The year-long rules process will begin again in 2015, and we will pull some of our members together on a workgroup to discuss what we need to improve Special Ed.
