WAU at Wayne State Forms The Immigration Solidarity Coalition
Across higher education campuses, the rapidly shifting immigration landscape is weighing heavily on students and faculty as they navigate visa concerns and travel restrictions. Some Canadian campus members are making contingency plans in case the border closes or travel becomes severely limited. International students are uncertain whether they can visit their families abroad—or whether they will be able to complete their degrees or enroll at their university or college at all. And there are members and students who fear for their own safety, or that of their families, simply driving to campus or leaving their homes.
With this in mind, WAU at Wayne State is forming a committee dedicated to coordinating the Wayne State response to immigration-related issues. The Immigration Solidarity Coalition is open to WAU members, students and members of other unions as well. They will serve as a hub for gathering information, pooling resources, and taking coordinated action. The goal is to be proactive and to act in solidarity doing what is right for students and faculty at the Wayne State Campus.

Tell Congress: Support the Working Americans Tax Cut Act

The AFT’s top priority is fighting for a better life for our members and the communities we serve. People are being squeezed in so many different directions today—with little relief in sight.
Recently, the Working Americans Tax Cut Act was introduced by its chief sponsor, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, along with Sen. Mark Kelly, and others. This idea came from a simple, bold proposal the AFT has been discussing with our members, allies, senators and House members. This legislation will result in thousands of dollars more in take-home pay for working families each year. And with the rising prices of groceries, gas, rent, healthcare and everything else, it’s never been more necessary!
President Trump promised to lower costs, but it hasn’t happened. This bill will put real money back into the pockets of working families by exempting the first $46,000 of income for an individual—or $92,000 for a married couple—from federal income taxes.
Last year, the AFT executive council passed a resolution calling for a working-class tax cut within a fair and effective taxation system where millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share. Congress taking up the idea through the Working Americans Tax Cut Act is our chance to make a meaningful difference in millions of Americans’ lives.
Write your members of Congress now and urge them to support the Working Americans Tax Cut Act.
Thank you for joining our call to give a tax cut to working families.

AFT Webinar Conflict & Communication: How Facing Hard Conversations Strengthens Our Well-Being – March 18

Why do we keep postponing the conversations we know we need to have? And if silence feels easier in the moment, why does it leave us more exhausted in the long run? Research shows that social stress accounts for up to 75% of stressful incidents at work and that withholding concerns increases emotional exhaustion. Yet many of us instinctively sidestep tension, even when honest dialogue could lighten our load.
