AFT Michigan Members Rally with MEJC Against Vouchers

Last Thursday, over 50 Michigan Education Justice Coalition (MEJC) community members, including several AFT Michigan members, rallied in Lansing to demand that the governor hear our concerns about the school voucher scheme known as ECCA, the Educational Choice for Children Act.

The ECCA, passed by Congress this past July, gives governors the ability to opt in to a federal tax credit scholarship program that would redirect public tax revenue to private schools. The governor has already vetoed a version of this program once. We are asking her to hold that line again, and we need you to help make that case.

Sign the petition: Tell the Governor to opt out of vouchers!

UM Flint Membership Blitz

Three unions on the University of Michigan-Flint campus are kicking off a joint membership blitz this week, taking place between March 23-March 30. Over a dozen union leaders, rank-and-file members, & staff have taken shifts to talk with union members in USU, LEO/LEO-GLAM, and the AFT-AAUP. New members have already signed cards and the energy is high thanks to the solidarity and enthusiasm of volunteers.

Kudos to the many union activists who have helped to plan the blitz!

Nationwide “No Kings” Day of Action – March 28

The “No Kings” coalition just crossed the threshold of more than 3,000 “No Kings” events planned across the country for March 28. That’s people power!

AFT members and our communities are doing our part to organize, show up for one another and make it clear that power in America belongs to the people, not to any one leader acting above the law. On March 28, we will reiterate that.

We’re at an inflection point. Families across the country are facing rising costs and living with fear in their communities. Instead of helping people build a better life, this administration is escalating repression at home and abroad.

But we are not staying silent. Join us in the streets on March 28.

For the AFT, this is personal. Our members work in the schools, hospitals and public institutions that hold communities together. We see the strain families are under, and we know what’s at stake for our students, our patients and our communities.
