Labor Day

It was great seeing so many AFT Michigan members for Labor Day festivities. Last Monday, we had the return of the Detroit Labor Day March, a picnic for members at our office, and a UM labor council picnic; then this weekend, the Huron Valley Area Labor Federation hosted their festivities. Wonderful kicking off the school year in solidarity with our union siblings from around the state.

Healthcare Workers on Strike at Ascension Providence Rochester

Please support OPEIU members in their ULP strike/lockout at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital. The strike is scheduled to take place from Monday, September 11th to Thursday, September 14th, with a solidarity day on Tuesday, September 12th. Hundreds of nurses and radiology technologists at Providence Rochester Hospital have been engaged in negotiations for a fair contract that prioritizes patient safety, increases wages, and improves working conditions to support the recruitment and retention of skilled staff for the Rochester community. Unfortunately, the hospital administration has engaged in unfair labor practices, with a total of 16 charges currently under investigation.

Upcoming Webinar: Reading Reform Across America – September 19

Join this webinar on September 19 from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm with Share My Lesson and Albert Shanker Institute to learn how you can implement the latest reading reform goals to deepen literacy support from Ester Quintero, senior fellow at the Albert Shanker Institute for students this year.

Reading Reform Across America, a report released by the Albert Shanker Institute this summer, documents how state legislatures nationwide have responded to these challenges. In this webinar, the report’s authors will describe the findings in ways that will help educators understand what to expect from state legislative action. Educators will also learn what priorities can be implemented without waiting for their state to act.

When you register, you can order free copies of a Special American Educator on Literacy
