Judge Rules Legislation that Lowers Healthcare Costs be Sent to the Governor

HB 6058 sponsored by Rep. Xiong (D, Warren) increases the amount that public employers pay toward their employees’ medical benefit plans and reduces costs for workers. Court of Appeals Judge Sima Patel ruled that according to the Michigan Constitution which states, “Every bill passed by the Legislature shall be presented to the governor before it becomes law, and the governor shall have 14 days to decide whether to sign or veto it.” All nine bills have been ordered to be released to the Governor. Now we need your help in advocating that the Governor sign HB 6058 and bring down healthcare costs for workers.

Please send a letter to the Governor asking her to sign HB 6058 when it reaches her desk.

Higher Ed Locals Gather at Wayne State

More than 50 leaders of higher education locals from across the state gathered at Wayne State Saturday to discuss the issues facing the sector as well as strategies for building coalitions and fighting forward. Participating unions also worked on planning events for the Higher Ed National Days of Action coming up in April. The event was hosted by Labor@Wayne and Higher Education Labor United and coordinated by many AFT Michigan leaders, including Anke Wolbert (EMUFT), Victor Rodriguez-Pereira (MSU-UNTF), Dan Birchok (UM-Flint AFT-AAUP), and Meghan McGowan & Sean O’Brien (Wayne Academic Union). A great step forward in building cross-union solidarity in our state. For more information on getting your local involved in this effort, please contact Anke Wolbert at emuftpresident@gmail.com.

Support WMed Residents at Bronson & Borgess Hospitals

The Resident & Fellow Alliance (RFA) is fighting for a fair contract and needs your support to win the union contract that they deserve.  Residents and Fellows are working to create better working conditions, including higher salaries, flexibility in time off, and fair educational stipends; unfortunately, negotiations have stalled and if progress is not made at the bargaining table, residents may be forced to strike in the near future.

Please sign this petition encouraging the WMed administration to abandon their stalling tactics and start working towards reaching a fair contract.
