EMUFT Launches Community Outreach Campaign

EMUFT members and Edna the EMU began a series of community tabling events this past Saturday starting at the Ypsilanti Farmers Market in Depot Town.  Community members came out in full force to sign the petition that asks EMU to do the right thing and pay a fair wage, increase job security for part time lecturers and reduce the highest workload in the state for the full time lecturers.  Kids were delighted to find Edna the Emu in a fun scavenger game, and several past EMUFT presidents were spotted taking part in the event.  If you haven’t signed the petition yet, here is a link:

AFT Calls Out Social Media for Undermining Schools, Mental Health

"Likes vs. Learning"

Together with several partners, the AFT is calling out social media platforms for undermining classroom learning, increasing costs for school systems and being a “root cause” of the nationwide youth mental health crisis. The groundbreaking report announced a series of recommendations and reforms that tech companies should implement to keep American children safe and protect learning environments. “Likes vs. Learning: The Real Cost of Social Media for Schools” has generated great interest. Its other sponsors are the American Psychological Association, Fairplay, ParentsTogether and Design It For Us.

New Online Course – Differentiating Instruction

We’re excited to announce registration is open to enroll online in Differentiating Instruction, a new, self-paced module that’s part of the AFT Professional Learning’s Strategies for Success series.

This research-based program consists of courses that address teaching and learning aspects of the preK-12 classroom experienced by new and veteran teachers alike.

The differentiation course, as with all of AFT’s training modules, is designed to foster:

  • Reflection on research;
  • Consideration of the research for application to classroom practice; and
  • Dialogue with other professionals as a way to expand professional knowledge.

This three-part Differentiating Instruction module takes about four hours to complete and is eligible for four hours of credit. If you are an AFT member and aren’t familiar with AFT eLearning, your first step is to create a free account.

In addition to this eLearning course, registered attendees will also be invited to attend three optional virtual support meetings held via Zoom, with an opportunity to earn up to 4.5 additional credit hours. Individuals who attend will participate in live training of overarching concepts, have opportunities for Q&A and receive targeted support from national AFT facilitators. Here are the dates:

  • Session 1 on Tiering:  Aug. 23, 6:30 – 8 p.m. EDT
  • Session 2 on Choice Boards: Sept. 20, 6:30 – 8 p.m.
