Governor Signs Education Budgets
It was an honor to be in attendance last Thursday when Governor Whitmer signed next year’s budget. As you know, this budget:
- Increases K-12 per-pupil funding by 5%;
- Increases community college funding by 4.9%; and
- Increases university funding by 6.4%.
Combined with the restoration of many of our important bargaining rights, which will go into effect next spring, we really have a chance to rebuild our state’s education system.
AFT TEACH & Great Lakes Union Leadership Institute
Michigan was well represented at this year’s AFT TEACH professional development conference and the Great Lakes Union Leadership Institute, with members from across the state reporting stimulating experiences full of great presentations and relationship-building. Thanks to all those who took time out of their summers to attend to build your skills!

AFT Recommits to Organizing
One of the major topics at last week’s AFT Executive Council meeting was how our union’s continued commitment to new member organizing is paying off. In the last two years, AFT has organized thousands of members in over 90 new units. A significant chunk of that growth has been here in Michigan, with new units stretching from healthcare professionals to school support staff to college faculty and university staff. All this means that in addition to our historic strength among K-12 educators, we’re the largest higher ed union and the fastest growing healthcare union in the U.S. As Randi Weingarten describes us, we’re the “home of the people who make a difference in other people’s lives.”
