AFT Convention
I flew back Sunday night from the AFT Convention in Boston. We had about 50 delegates from 15 Michigan locals there participating in all the events. Some highlights:
- Terrence Martin and I were re-elected by the delegates as AFT Vice Presidents;
- The affiliation agreement uniting AAUP and AFT was officially signed on stage by AFT President Randi Weingarten and AAUP President Irene Mulvey;
- Great resolutions on many topics, including addressing teacher and staff shortages, healthcare staffing, livable wages for support staff, healthcare for part-time faculty, fighting austerity in higher education, reproductive rights, teaching our true history, and many more; and
- Recognition of our new units who have organized since the last convention (Crestwood Paras; Huron School District Support Staff; UM librarians, archivists, and curators; Washtenaw Assistant Prosecutors; and Wayne RESA English Language Facilitators).
A big thank you to all the Michigan delegates who made the journey and participated.
