AAUP Summer Institute in Detroit
We had a great turnout of Michigan higher ed leaders from more than a dozen locals at the annual AAUP Summer Institute hosted at Wayne State University this weekend. One of the highlights was a great panel on defending democracy featuring 3 great (current and former) AFT Michigan leaders: Eric Rader, President of HFCCFT 1650; Rep. Carrie Rheingans, UM-LEO 6244; and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, former member of WAU 6075. Participants also chipped in to help WAU in their fight for a fair contract.
Michigan Supreme Court Just Gave Workers a Huge Win
In great news for working families, the Michigan Supreme Court just ruled that the legislature’s move in 2018 to gut voter-initiated proposals to increase the minimum wage and provide workers guaranteed sick leave was unconstitutional.
We all witnessed the Republican-controlled legislature quite literally steal out of the pockets of Michigan workers in 2018, which means working people have been robbed of wages and sick leave for the past 5 years. This ruling is the first step in righting this wrong and making workers whole. The Michigan Supreme Court ordered the will of the people to go into effect early next year, meaning workers will soon get guaranteed paid sick leave and a steady raise in the minimum wage.
The Michigan Supreme Court had workers’ backs and put Michigan back on the path voters want for our state – one where all workers are paid a wage they can raise a family on, and are guaranteed the paid leave they need to take care of themselves and their loved ones.
