Help Plymouth-Canton Educational Office Personnel Get a Fair Contract
Plymouth-Canton Educational Office Personnel, AFT Local 6172, represents 65 Administrative Assistants (AA’s) in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools. Members attended the most recent Board of Education meeting to advocate for fair compensation after years of wage stagnation. During the meeting, the AA’s expressed how they felt disrespected over the years. Kathy Cleveland reminded the board of education of how important the AA’s are to the district:”We are often the first person to interact with our community, including parents and students.” Local President Bobbi Hejka told the board why it was important to come and stand before them after being an employee of the district for 12 years, “I have only seen an increase in my paycheck once in the past five years as healthcare contributions have increased more than my pay. We do not make a livable wage.” Please help the Plymouth-Canton Administrative Assistants by sending an email to the Executive Director of Human Resources Abdul Madyun abdul.madyun@pccsk12.com asking him to return to the bargaining table and bargain a fair contract for the administrative assistants.
Metro Detroit Labor Day Parade
Mark your calendars for the 2024 Metro Detroit Labor Day Parade – Monday, September 2. Our section will line up at Trumbull and Michigan starting at 7am. At 9am, we will march to Roosevelt Park (Michigan Central train station) where there will be a labor program. After the parade, AFT Michigan members and families are invited to stop by our building (2661 E. Jefferson) for an informal BBQ before heading home.
Democratic National Convention Underway
Along with many other leaders from Michigan and around the country, I’m in Chicago this week for the DNC. There’s great energy so far – delegates are very excited to be here and take part in this historic process.

Order AFT New Member Organizing Materials
AFT members unite to fight for real solutions because we understand that when we band together at work and in our communities, we can create a better life for all. Together, we’re fighting the extremists who want to destroy public education, dismantle our democracy, defund public services, decimate healthcare and demonize the vulnerable—and we’re standing up to the privatizers who are more concerned about profits than people.
The greater our numbers, the greater our voice and power. We’re now 1.75 million members strong—and growing! With 118 new units organized since June 2023, we’re now the second-largest healthcare union and the largest higher education union.
To help you continue growing and gaining power, we’ve refreshed our organizing materials. Order today at go.aft.org/AFTmaterials.
Materials are available year-round. Whenever you are planning an organizing push, union event or other mobilizing opportunity, you can select the resources you need, including organizing brochures that show prospective members how to amplify their voice, a Value of Belonging poster that highlights our accomplishments, pocket calendars, and professional learning options and benefits brochures that reinforce our day-to-day support for our members.
Place your order and spread the word: We’re creating a better life for all!
In solidarity,
Terrence Martin
