AFT Michigan President David Hecker released the following statement on the news that U.S. District Court Judge David M. Lawson has declared as unconstitutional Michigan’s ban on domestic partner benefits:

“Yesterday, a federal judge confirmed what we’ve always known to be true, that Michigan’s 2011 ban on domestic partner benefits is unconstitutional and discriminatory,” said David Hecker, president of AFT Michigan. “Such callous laws have no place in our state and I’m happy to see that fact finally recognized. Judge Lawson’s ruling affirms our belief that working families should be able to support each other, no matter the makeup of the family.”
