Right now, all over the country, parents, students, teachers and all those who work in public education are struggling to figure out how to get back to school in the middle of a public health emergency and an economic crisis. We must ensure schools have the resources to open safely during the coronavirus pandemic, and we must fund public education, including the critical academic, social and emotional services kids need. States, cities, towns and rural communities are all facing extreme budget shortages. Without state and local aid, we will experience waves of layoffs, including teachers, nurses and other essential workers, and cuts to public education and schools, among other critical services, at a time when more—not less—is needed.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the #HEROESAct in May, but Donald Trump, Betsy DeVos and the Senate Republicans refuse to act. They are making ridiculous demands that put our children’s health, safety and future at risk.
On Wednesday, September 2, parents, students, teachers, school staff and community activists will lead a Day of Action to demand President Trump and the Republican senators pass a COVID relief aid package to fund what we need to safely reopen schools, fund public education and make sure our kids get what they need!
