AFT Michigan Remarks on 2021 State of the State
MICHIGAN — AFT Michigan released the following statement regarding Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s 2021 State of the State address. The statement should be attributed to David Hecker, president of AFT Michigan:
“The past year has been a rough one, with a litany of challenges facing educators, students and the public school community. Fortunately, thanks to Gov. Whitmer’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michigan is in a better position than many other states during this difficult time. We are confident her vision and leadership will help Michigan’s public schools, colleges and universities weather the storm and build a stronger future for students and educators. She continues to prioritize addressing racial disparities in access to care, will fight for equitable resources for classrooms, and has mapped out a vision for getting our schools and our state out of this pandemic. She continues to have the backs of educators with the creation of the MI Classroom Heroes Grants and we’re confident that the Return to School Advisory Council that the Governor cited in her remarks will help put Michigan’s schools on a pathway to recovery and help students make up learning gaps over the coming year. No doubt there are challenges ahead, but we’re ready to continue to work with the Governor to ensure all students and educators, from preK-12 to higher education, get the education and resources they need to thrive.”
