AFT Michigan is seeking an experienced and energized Membership Systems Coordinator to join our dynamic statewide union of educators and healthcare providers. Our team of staff works with approximately 100 local unions across the state to build strong locals, develop leaders, bargain and enforce contracts, organize, and work for social justice. This position is based in our Detroit office but involves occasional travel across the state. The Membership Systems Coordinator will strengthen AFT Michigan by working with our Membership & Information Services team to:

  • Develop local leaders and staff, particularly those responsible for financial and data management in their unions;
  • Assist with AFT Michigan bookkeeping and financial management, particularly during peak periods;
  • Assist with AFT Michigan database management, particularly during peak periods;
  • Develop and manage internal AFT Michigan systems;
  • Coordinate with AFT, AFL-CIO, and other affiliate organizations to maintain accurate information;
  • Develop and present training and leadership development programs;
  • Support the formation of new bargaining units
  • Support internal organizing campaigns to increase membership; 
  • Build a stronger AFT Michigan and labor movement; and
  • Accomplish other duties and special projects as assigned.

 Required Qualifications:

  • Independent project management skills
  • General computer literacy and proficiency in data management (e.g. writing spreadsheet formulas)
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities

 Preferred Experience:

  • Database management 
  • Bookkeeping and financial management 
  • Experience in unions (particularly AFT) or other social justice organizations
  • Leadership development and training 

Competitive salary and excellent benefits commensurate with the contract between AFT Michigan and the AFT Michigan Staff Union.
