January 27, 2014 – The AFT Michigan Administrative Board has endorsed Mark Schauer for Michigan Governor and Gary Peters for the U.S. Senate.

“Michigan needs a Governor who understands that we need to invest in public education to compete for good jobs and build a strong economy,” said David Hecker, President of AFT Michigan. “As the son of a teacher, Mark Schauer knows that education is the key to opportunity, and as Governor, he will make education a top priority to help our students compete for good 21st Century jobs. Our members are energized and ready to help make Mark
our next Governor.”

“We are very pleased to endorse Congressman Gary Peters for the U.S. Senate. Gary Peters has always been a friend of education and is in tune with our members on issues like the accessibility of higher education, investments in strong pre-school programs, full support of public schools and collective bargaining rights for Michigan workers,” David Hecker, explained. “Although no one can replace, Sen. Carl Levin, we believe Gary Peters will bring the same kind of work ethic and integrity to the job.”

In addition to these endorsements, AFT Michigan also endorsed the following U.S. Congressional candidates:

  • District 1 – Jerry Cannon
  • District 5 – Congressman Dan Kildee
  • District 6 – Paul Clements
  • District 9 – Congressman Sander Levin
  • District 12 – Congressman John Dingell
  • District 13 – Congressman John Conyers
