Stop Over Spending Ballot Proposal - Think Before You Sign!
A new group called Michigan Stop Over Spending (SOS) announced that it would begin collecting signatures on an initiative petition to put on the ballot a proposal to stop what it refers to as the "wasteful government spending that continues to drive businesses and families out of the state." Nice sentiment, bad effect on anything paid for by state government - schools, universities, health care, public safety, etc. The SOS initiative would amend the state constitution to limit state spending increases to the rate of inflation plus population growth each year. This part of the plan is basically the same as the TABOR (the Taxpayers Bill of Rights) concept that has been adopted in other states. This proposal would have a highly detrimental impact on education and other human services. After passing such a proposal in Colorado:
The TABOR legislation had such a detrimental impact on Colorado that the voters there dramatically modified it last fall. Michigan doesn't need to experiment with someone else's bad idea. Think about your job, your family, and your students before you sign the SOS petition. Stop Over Spending: Think Before You Sign download .pdf |
