Raise the Minimum Wage in Michigan, It's Simply a Matter of Fairness
AFT Michigan, as part of the AFL-CIO, and participating with other organizations, is supporting a change in the Michigan constitution that would raise the minimum wage in Michigan. It has been eight years since the minimum wage was last increased to $5.15 an hour. At $5.15 an hour, a full-time worker earns just $10,712 a year - $5,000 less than the poverty level for a family of three. And despite the widespread belief that teenagers are the primary group of people working at minimum wage jobs, seventy-one percent of minimum wage workers are over 20 years old, and forty percent of minimum wage workers are the sole breadwinners in their families. Raising the minimum wage would directly benefit at least 464,000 Michigan workers.
