Thanks to the Graduate Employees Organization Local 3550 at UM, Saturday afternoon we learned of the imminent beheading of Mujaba’a al-Sweikat in Saudi-Arabia. This came to the attention of GEO from a London-based Human Rights Organization, Reprieve.

Mujtaba’a al-Sweikat was detained at King Fahd Airport in 2012 on his way to the United States to attend college. He was moved this past weekend from detention in Dammam to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where executions by beheading customarily take place. Mujtaba’a and others were arrested for attending a peaceful, anti-government protest, for which they were sentenced to death, a despicable violation of international law and basic humanity.

The original information was that he had been admitted to UM when arrested. Further research indicates he was bound for WMU.

AFT and AFT Michigan responded by contacting Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, Senator Gary Peters, UM Regent Mark Bernstein, and contacts in the federal government. The response from our elected officials, the UM Administration and others was immediate and strong. AFT MI has now reached out to WMU, which also made a strong statement.
