“Any plan for mass charterization of public schools would be harmful to students, harmful to school employees, and harmful to communities,” said David Hecker, President of AFT Michigan.  “The research proves this. The Detroit Public Schools (DPS) and the Education Achievement Authority (EAA) RFP revealed by State Representatives Banks and Gay-Dagnogo underscores the fact that DPS and the EAA could currently charter their entire districts without any new legislation.  This is why AFT Michigan continues to fight as a partner in the Coalition for the Future of Detroit Schoolchildren for legislation that will allow the state to address the DPS debt accumulated by the state, returns governance to an elected school board and dissolves the EAA.  This is also why we support the creation of a locally-controlled Detroit Education Commission that, among other responsibilities, would help to bring coherence to the Detroit educational landscape.”
