About the AFT Michigan!

Message from the Officers

David Hecker, President Lois Lofton Doniver, Secretary-Treasurer

Welcome to AFT Michigan.

Whether you are a member, potential member, parent, community leader, elected official or student thank you for checking us out.

We are the 35,000 member state federation of the 1.3 million member American Federation of Teachers. We represent PreK-12 and ISD teachers and support staff, community college and university faculty, lecturers, administrators and graduate employees, and city and credit union employees.

Our mission is to advance the interests of our members and the institutions in which they work.

To fulfill our mission we work to build strong local unions, are active legislatively, politically and with education policy, offer a comprehensive professional development program, and organize the unorganized to bring the benefits of unionism to others and to enhance our power.

To fulfill our mission we play a key role in advancing a progressive agenda in Michigan, be it defeating vouchers, saving affirmative action, or creating an adequate, fair and stable revenue stream for our state and the important services it provides or funds.

We go about our work with the firm belief that the more informed and mobilized our members are the more that will be accomplished for education employees and the students they educate. A union is its members. They are our strength. Their activism is the key to our success.

Thank you again for checking us out.

David Hecker, President
Lois Lofton Doniver, Secretary-Treasurer
