68th CONVENTION
MAY 6-7, 2005
RESOLUTION #11
IN OPPOSITION TO AN ANTI-AFFIRMATIVE ACTION CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

WHEREAS, The MFT&SRP has a long history of supporting Affirmative Action; and

WHEREAS, Affirmative Action is a tool that gives qualified individuals equal access and equal opportunity to contribute regardless or race, sex or national origin; and

WHEREAS, Affirmative Action is not about reverse discrimination; and

WHEREAS, The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the use of race as one component of admission at the University of Michigan; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Ward Connerly from California, and others, have come into Michigan and circulated a petition calling for a constitutional amendment to eliminate Affirmative Action programs in Michigan; and

WHEREAS, The Anti-Affirmative Action Constitutional Amendment will appear on the November 2006 General Election ballot; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED: That the MFT&SRP reiterate its support of Affirmative Action; and BE IT FINALLY

RESOLVED: That the MFT&SRP opposes the Anti-Affirmative Action Constitutional Amendment and will work for its defeat in November 2006.
